I recently tried going KETO for six weeks. My intention behind trying KETO was that we learned about many benefits KETO can bring to the table during our comparative diets course at the Institute of Holistic Nutrition. This made me curious and I wanted to try it for myself.
What I found was that it does work. Your body switches to burning fat for fuel instead of carbohydrates and gets to release some old fat storage. I lost 2% of body fat and over 8 lbs in 6 weeks of doing keto.
I also found that your focus sharpens. A lot of people don’t know this but our nervous systems also run on fat. The myelin sheath that connects our Neurons in the brain is made from -surprise surprise- fat!! I was in the hardest course of IHN during keto and I am convinced it helped me stay focused and on track with all my school and work workload. Keto is also amazing for any nervous system disorders people may experience.
As a female, I learned that my hormones loved it. Hormones are built from fat – clearly with 70% fat available from my diet, my body was able to build my hormones in a more efficient way. I’ve had hormonal imbalances in the past and noticed that on keto, my cycle was like clockwork.
In order to be in ketosis, you need to be at <40g of carbs per day and at least 70% of fat per day.
This definitely requires tracking of your foods and macros.
